On Sunday we were competing in the Lincoln Grand Prix for the third round of the Womens Road Series. Lizzy, lying second overall in the series, was out to make amends for her misfortune at the Essex Giro, where she ended up in a hedge, and she was ably supported by a strong team of Liz, Gabby and Hannah.
The race set off from under the castle in Lincoln and almost immediately was beset by a huge crash. Fortunately our riders were unscathed although Liz did find herself the wrong side of the carnage and, along with several others, never managed to reattach herself to the main field.
The other three rode strongly in the main bunch as a three rider breakaway went clear and as the last of these, Rebecca Durrell, was swept up in the closing stages they were all still in contention. Lizzy in particular was looking strong and comfortable on the climb of Michaelgate and expectations were high. Unfortunately her run of recent misfortune was to continue however and as the bunch crested Michaelgate for the final time she was knocked sideways onto the pavement where she got tangled up with a spectator. The battle was lost.
Despite immediate doom and despair the mood lifted on reflection at a good strong team performance. Lizzy, Hannah and Gabby were seconds behind the winner and on another day Liz will be on the right side of luck and not having to chase shadows for three laps.
We regroup in this series as Lizzy still lies third overall going into the Cicle Classic on June 4th
