Gabby and Vicki were racing in the Dave Peck Memorial Race in Virginia Water. Another great event for us. Gabby has posted the following report:
It was a crisp, calm and sunny day as Vicki Fearn and I lined up amongst 70 strong riders to take on the Dave Peck Memorial RR, round two of the women’s national team series. As we set off in the neutralized zone we got our race heads on and prepared ourselves to tackle 10 laps of a circuit including the (in)famous Staple Hill, total distance being 53 miles. We were both well positioned at the start until boom, I hit a big pothole and punctured. Slight panic followed by a moment of ease when I realised we were still neutralized which meant I didn’t have to destroy myself to get back to the bunch after a quick wheel change!
And we were off! As there were only two of us from Sunsport Velo RT our plan was to conserve as much energy as possible and let the bigger teams with more riders do the work on the front. The course had many flat sections and descents which meant the pace was consistently fast. Although attempts were made by riders to break away nothing seemed to stick. It wasn’t until halfway through the race that a potentially dangerous move of three riders managed to get a 30 second gap on the rest of the field. With three laps to go the bunch was reduced to about 20 riders chasing the three leaders, which eventually got caught on the last lap. Coming in to the final corner before the last blast up Staple Hill to the finish I was positioned near the front and tried to choose a good wheel to be on for the sprint. With 200m to go I was 5th wheel and pedalled as hard as I could. But at the end of the day sprinting isn’t my strongest point in cycling so a few riders came around me right before the line and I rolled in 9th. Vicki was in a chasing group behind and rode strongly throughout the race. A successful race for Sunsport Velo RT!
